Tips for Improving Group Working

Concept Overview

A set of short videos targeted at students in high schools or colleges. With a simple but funny narrative, the videos present common key problems in conducting group assignments and provide recommended solutions. 

Need Statement

Collaborative learning is widely accepted as an effective learning method, which can enhance the students’ abilities to solve problems and facilitate the understanding and transformation of knowledge in group interaction. Therefore, group work has become a common and even necessary part of students ‘assignments all over the world. 


However, effective collaborative learning cannot be achieved just by bringing several students together. For students who lack experience in group working, they often do it in the wrong way so that the final learning outcomes fail to meet expectations. Students need more guidance to understand the meaning of collaborative learning and to know how to achieve learning goals.

Concept Description

Although improving collaborative learning requires efforts to form both teachers and students, let us focus on giving students some practical suggestions at this time. Short videos are chosen because they are entertaining and easy to spread on social media, tending to induce more interest and empathy with more students.


It consists of three short videos, each of which describes a scenario of a common problem and related solution during collaborative learning. The three topics are listed below: 

 

  • Don’t meet online if a face-to-face meeting is available.

  • Set peer evaluation early.

  • Start with small goals and share your understanding.

 

Teachers can play these videos to students after assigning group tasks, helping students understand the purpose of assignments and avoid wasteful duplication of effort. Schools or other educational institutions can put these short videos on their social media pages, providing guidance to students and making the online persona more friendly and attractive.

Learning Theory
  • Social Constructivism(content design):
    Positive interdependence is created among members of a group by orchestrating the availability of rewards or recognition to encourage cooperation and collaboration. ()All three topics are about how to motivate active participation and sharing understanding in group work.

  • Narrative Theory:

  • Dual Coding Theory(motion design):
    People build both verbal representational connection and visual representational connection with previous knowledge when receiving new information. There is also a referential connection is constructed between the two mental representations.

  • Choose Topic: Based on personal observation and experience and oral interview to peers.

  • Video Detail: Real person/college students, school setting, dramatic, funny, 3 short videos within 45 seconds.

  • Writing Script and sketch storyboard

  • Shooting: Android mobile phone, portrait.

  • Editing.: Tools: Premiere and promo.com
