Are You Hungry?

Concept Overview

1-minute audio that uses different voices or tones to say the same sentences "I am hungry". The audio is expected to be put into a social media platform to inspire the audience's creativity from the auditory aspect.

Need Statement

Compared to video and pictures, audio seems to be in a position that is easily overlooked. In fact, sound plays a key role at the cognitive level. Effective use of audio in teaching materials can mobilize emotions, enhance memory, and stimulate imagination and creativity.

Concept Description

The basic idea of this design is to show the charm of audio art with a simple, attractive and convincing audio work. I put my experience as a voice acting amateur into the design. Through performing the same sentence "I am hungry" in 19 situations, the audience can understand that even the same sentence could have completely different presentation ways and meanings under different situations.

Some details:

  • Put contrasting situations together in sequence, such as "happy" and "sad", so as to increase the difference between the last voice and the next voice, arousing the audience's attention.

  • Add appropriate oral expressions to make relevant situations more vivid. For example, panting when running.

  • Joyful and fast-paced background music can increase emotional appeal.

Target Audience

People who are interested in audio creativity.

Learning Goals
  • Learn how to use appropriate voices to express different emotions or situations.

  • Improving the skill of audio narrative by learning more about voice acting.

Learning Theory
  • Situated learning: Representation arises from activity, are lexicalized in a way of depending on the context.

  • Voice Principle in Multimedia: “People learn more deeply when the words in a multimedia message are spoken in a human voice rather than in a machine voice” (Mayer, p345, 2014).

  • Temporal Contiguity Principle in Multimedia: “People learn more deeply from a multimedia message when corresponding animation and narration are presented simultaneously rather than successively” (Mayer, p281, 2014)

Design Process
  • Write a script for voice acting.  Annotate each "I am hungry" with different emotions or situations.

  • Record voice, edit and mix with Adobe Audition.

  • Add background and caption with Promo and produce a demo.
